THE CONGRESS

February 24-27, 2008
National Institute of Applied Sciences, Toulouse, France

Non pathogenic clostridia ofindustrial interest are generally chemoorganotrophs that require a carbohydrate source to survive. They are able to use a number of different fermentable carbohydrates including xylan, levan, pectin, starch, and for some of them crystalline cellulose that is breakdown by a large complex of proteins called cellulosome. These carbohydrates can be converted in a large variety of products including organic acids (acetic, butyric and lactic acids), alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, propyleneglycol) and ketone (acetone). They can also fix atmospheric nitrogen and produce hydrogen. Among the non-pathogenic Clostridia, Clostridium acetobutylicum represent the model organism subject of numerous fundamental studies regarding its genetic, metabolism and physiology but also of applied research for the industrial production of bulk chemicals. The Congress will focus on. Primary metabolism, carbohydrates utilisation, sporulation, genomics and metabolic engineering of non-pathogenic clostridia.
